Smurfit Kappa Group
Tony Smurfit is the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Smurfit Kappa Group (SKG), one of the leading providers of paper-based packaging solutions in the world.
He began his career with the then Jefferson Smurfit Group in 1985 progressing through positions of increasing responsibility in Europe and the United States prior to taking up his current position on 1st September 2015. He has been a member of the main Board of Directors since 1989.
Mr. Smurfit was one of the leaders of the 2002 take private of the Jefferson Smurfit Group which was a €3.7 billion management deal with the private equity firm, Madison Dearborn. He was pivotal in the 2005 merger between the Jefferson Smurfit Group and Kappa Packaging of the Netherlands assuring the seamless integration of the businesses making the renamed Smurfit Kappa Group the European leader in corrugated packaging. He also played a pivotal role in the return, in 2007, of the Smurfit Kappa Group to the public equity markets in a 1.4 billion flotation, the largest ever equity raising in the paper and forest products sector.
