Sofidel: Fifty Years of Growth into the Future

The Sofidel Group is the second largest household and hygiene tissue manufacturer in Europe, and sixth largest in the world. Established in 1966, the Group has factories in 12 European countries and the United States, with over 5,500 employees, and a turnover of 1,809 million Euro in 2015. After entering the North-American market in 2012, the Group has today manufacturing factories in Haines City (FL), Green Bay (WI), Henderson (NV), Tulsa (OK), Hattiesburg (MS), and has commercial offices in Philadelphia (PA). In June 2016 Sofidel broke ground for its new first integrated plant in Circleville (OH), which will become the most important Sofidel factory in the US. Attention to the technological innovation, geographical coverage (presence of plants near the end markets), sustainability and strong commercial relations with the major players in large-scale distribution are some of the factors that have helped Sofidel to become one of the leading players in the world and that will be some of the strong points of Sofidel growth in the US market.

The North American Tissue Market - New Challenges

  • Can there be further growth in the relatively mature market?
  • Will good consolidation be challenged by several new players in the next few years?
  • Battle between brands and private labels - who will win in the longer term?
  • New technologies - will there be place for new quality categories?
  • Raw materials: will non-wood fibers (straw, bamboo etc.) be real alternatives to replace recycled fiber as supply geting extremely scarce?
  • What will be the next moves for the leaders to remain their dominant position?
  • Will all the planned new investments result in a serious overcapacity?
  • Is there a threat that even more foreign players outside the continent will step into the North American tissue business?

Institutional Channels Dynamic in North America and the Future of Tissue Demand

In a highly mature North American (US and Canada) tissue marketplace, the away-from-home tissue segment is fraught with its share of challenges. While there are still opportunities for tissue products and tissue premiumisation in, for instance, the hospitality industry, there are also challenges in driving sales. These challenges are shaped in no small part by the changing institutional landscape. Understanding the dynamic within the institutional channels is the key to assessing future risks and opportunities with respect to tissue demand in the away-from-home segment.

Euromonitor’s presentation will review the expected performance of the tissue products in away-from-home segment over 2015-2020 and will then discuss in more detail current and future trends in the institutional channels. The presentation will examine the size and behavior of all channels of an economy in North American markets, from government and healthcare to manufacturing and education. Some of the key trends in contract foodservice and contract cleaning will also be revealed.

It’s Not Conventional, It’s Tissue

If there were one solution to making tissue, we wouldn’t be here. Members of the Tissue Italy network behind the iT’s Tissue event cooperate effectively to create a world-class event, but they also compete with each other on the world-wide market. Just as tissue producers strive to make better tissue in a better way, so equipment suppliers seek to provide better solutions. The level of cooperation behind the iT’s Tissue brand extends to creating an event which is as unique as it is effective. Beyond that it’s about individual companies attempting to defy convention; proving that tissue is anything but conventional. And the live demonstrations at iT’s Tissue provide a window on technology which no other event format can replicate.
