Smurfit Kappa Group
Tony Smurfit is the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Smurfit Kappa Group (SKG), a FTSE 100 company and one of the leading providers of paper-based packaging solutions in the world.
He began his career with the then Jefferson Smurfit Group in 1985 progressing through positions of increasing responsibility in Europe and the United States. He was President & COO of The Group prior to taking up his current position on 1st September 2015. He has been a member of the main Board of Directors since 1989.
Mr. Smurfit was one of the leaders of the transformation of the Jefferson Smurfit Group through its being taken private in 2002, merging with Kappa Packaging in 2005, an IPO in 2007 and recent accelerated growth though investment and acquisition.
Since becoming Group CEO, Tony has led the implementation of a rolling strategic plan in Smurfit Kappa which has seen over €4bn invested in the business. Smurfit Kappa has announced plans to invest a further €1.2bn in excess of maintenance capital in the business over the years 2021 to 2023, underpinned by an equity placing of over €650m in November 2020.
