General Manager, Wood Chipping Operations
Danny Knoesen is currently General Manager of NCT’s Wood Chipping Operations in KZN, South Africa. NCT has 3 operational Wood Chip Mills situated in Richards Bay and Durban, supplying approximately 1m BDMT of hardwood chips to international markets each year. NCT Forestry Cooperative is a forestry cooperative with 1800 active members and representing almost 300 000 ha.
Danny has spent 28 years in the forestry, paper and pulp industry. Prior to joining NCT, he spent many years with Sappi – starting his career as a Maintenance Engineer and Production Manager in the paper manufacturing department, specializing in Containerboard products. He also spent time as Commercial and Logistics Manager, controlling and managing both inbound and outbound supply chains for Sappi’s Tugela Mill in South Africa. He also served as Pulp Mill Manager at the same facility, managing both softwood and hardwood pulping lines, Utilities and Recovery processes. Danny also has extensive ERP systems expertise, having been continuously involved with Sappi’s SAP implementation over a 10 year period.
Just prior to joining NCT, Danny served as Kraft Paper and Packaging Business Manager for Sappi South Africa, responsible for Marketing, Sales, Product Development and overall profitability of Sappi’s Kraft and Packaging Paper division.
Danny holds a graduate degree in Engineering from the University of Natal, Durban.
South Africa: Outlook for Woodchip Export Supply

South Africa was a pioneer in exporting hardwood woodchips to Japan, with shipments commencing in 1975. In 2017, South Africa was the fourth largest supplier of hardwood chips to the Asian markets, including about 1.7 million BDMT of eucalyptus and wattle chips. This presentation will provide details on the two companies currently exporting woodchips from South Africa, as well as providing insight on future woodchip export supply.
